Superman and Batman to team up in new movie

In 2015, Superman and Batman will appear together for the very first time on the big screen, it has been announced.

Apple launch a cheaper iPhone?

More and more sources are claiming that the rumoured cheap iPhone may indeed exist. They say that the scaled down model will have a colourful and plastic exterior, lower resolution camera, scaled down version of iOS 7 and so on.

While the premium model will carry on from where iPhone 5 has left off, this cheap model will be slotted a little behind it. For example the premium model may have a 12 MP camera, the rumoured cheap iPhone will come fitted with a 5MP or 8MP camera. It may not even have Retina display--the screen Apple introduced with iPhone 4. It will sell for a reduced price of over Rs 20,000 ($330-$400) as opposed to Rs 45,000 for the top model.

Those who say that the phone may not exist believe that there is no reason for Apple to launch a trimmed down version. By launching a cheaper model Apple will be bringing down its profit. Volume of sales doesn't really matter if there is no great margin for the company. We know Nokia will confirm that!

They point out that the recently leaked images, which are, supposedly, of the outer shell of the rumoured device, lack physical control buttons or even slots. That is not in tune with the iPhone or iPad hardware we are familiar with until now. Unless Apple is going to introduce a totally new way of communicating with the hardware, those pictures may not be genuine.

But those who say that such a device exists argue that Apple has sensed the premium smartphone market has become saturated and that the high end users are not all that enthusiastic in upgrading their devices each year. They also say that the company has realised that the future may be in developing countries like India. So Apple will bring out a compromised solution like this.

Yes, Apple needs cheaper devices if it wants better penetration in price sensitive markets like India.

47 killed, 300 injured in 6.6-magnitude quake in China

Beijing: (Monday, July 22, 2013)

A 6.6-magnitude strong earthquake on Monday ripped through China's northwestern Gansu Province, killing at least 47 people and injuring nearly 300 others, local authorities said.

The quake shook the area at 7:45 a.m. (local time) at the junction of the Minxian County and Zhangxian County, the Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 20 km, was 170 km away from the provincial capital Lanzhou, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted officials as saying.

A 5.6-magnitude quake jolted the same area later at 9:12 am, the agency said.

"The death toll from the deadly quake has risen to 47, with 296 injured," Xinhua quoted Gansu Earthquake Networks Center as saying.

Some 21,000 rooms from 5,600 houses have been damaged, while 1,203 rooms collapsed in Zhangxian county. Cables were damaged, cutting telecommunications in Minxian county.

Communication was cut off in 13 towns of Zhangxian County. Officials of with the Minxian County government said most of the townships in the county have been affected by the quake. The townships of Meichuan and Puma were seriously hit.

Many homes in the quake-hit region collapsed, according to the civil affairs bureau of the Dingxi City.

The locals in Minxian County said strong tremor was felt in the area and they saw trees and homes were shaking. They also said that the quake lasted for about one minute.

Soldiers, police and more than 300 local militiamen have been dispatched to the quake-hit region to help with rescue efforts. The provincial civil affairs department has sent 500 tents and 2,000 quilts to the quake-hit region.

The Red Cross Society of China has also dispatched a team of disaster relief workers, with 200 tents, 1,000 family emergency kits and 2,000 cotton-padded jackets.

Lanzhou Railway Bureau has started the emergency response to guarantee the safety of railway bridges and communication equipment in the province.
Light to moderate rain and partly heavy rain were forecast in Dingxi city, according to the provincial meteorological station, which would affect the rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, the earthquake was also felt in Tianshui city and the provincial capital city of Lanzhou besides in the cities of Xi'an, Baoji and Xianyang in neighbouring Shaanxi Province.
